Suffolk Sportscar Engineering is dedicated
to production of the visually exact reproduction
of the legendary Jaguar SS100. It is a true and pure Jaguar, fully
recognised and accepted by all the Jaguar car clubs
around the world. The Jaguar SS100 was originally designed in 1935
by William Lyons, the founder of Jaguar Cars Limited
. You will find a history of the Jaguar SS100
and the Suffolk SS100 on this website.
I created my first three page website in 1997. I then designed a second
200 page website which went live in April 2000. We
now achieve over 100,000 hits per month This current website is the 2004
edition(revised 10 /8/060 and it contains even more information about the
car. The images are high quality,
and the site is now to be updated regularly. For the original
fans of the Suffolk SS100, we have preserved the previous
website which can be accessed through the 'Shows,
Events and Lifestyle' section of this website.
The Jaguar SS100 is one of the most
important cars ever produced in England. It marked the
high point of English sports car design before the start
of World War 2. When the leading
motoring writers of Europe selected their choice of
the 100 most important cars of the 20th century, they included the legendary Jaguar
SS100. As only 314 were ever made this is certainly
an achievement. Every serious book about sports cars
includes articles and photographs of the Jaguar SS100.
This landmark car acted as the mainspring for the development
of the remarkable lineage of post war
Jaguar sports cars.
My life has always revolved around Jaguars.
My father was a director of an East Anglian multi-franchise
motor dealership group , W.H.Johnson and Sons Ltd. and I always wanted
to be involved with cars. In 1960, I was apprenticed as a Management Trainee
to Botwoods, the Jaguar distributors in both Ipswich and Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.
All aspects of garage workshop life and the retail car
business became part of my management training course.
In 1963 -1965 I was selling new and used Jaguars
from Botwoods showrooms in Bury St Edmunds. Now, forty plus
years later, I am still in Suffolk, building my own Jaguars. In the years between, I have owned
numerous Jaguars -four XJ6s, an XJ12, a MK VII, a XK140, four
E Types, an SSII Coupe, and ,(for a brief period in 1965)
an original Jaguar SS100. During the 1970s, I restored
and raced two Lister Jaguars for six wonderful seasons
of Historic Car Racing in England and Europe.
Today my life is very busy with the
promotion and production of the Suffolk SS100 Jaguar. After nine years in Bury St. Edmunds we decided to move east to Woodbridge in August 2006 where we have much more space and a fantastic new workshop set-up.
Our total
annual production of cars is deliberately limited as
the careful preparation of the donor components and
manufacturing of the many specialised parts that are
needed for the SS100 takes time.
My workshop team is always busy as there is a steady
demand for self-assembly components and for works-built
cars. In addition, we handle the sale of pre-owned cars, but as over 70% of our cars are still with their
original owners, these cars are always scarce.
Please call me personally if you would like to arrange a workshop visit and test drive. Tel 07967 339424.
Each year I attend and exhibit
at a large number of car shows. You can see where and
when I am likely to be in the Events section.
At the larger shows, I usually exhibit a rolling chassis
and a fully built car.In recent years I have broadened my show attendance
schedule and exhibited the SS100 in Germany, Italy, California and New Zealand. Jan and I enjoy driving in classic car rallies and have toured all over Europe and New Zealand . The
Suffolk SS100 is an ideal rally car.
Our cars are now scattered all over the
world with owners enjoying classic car events. We are organising our fourth Jaguar Classic Car Tour of South Island, New Zealand for 2008, and will go again in 2009. If you have a Jaguar, come and join us ........
We have been busy preparing for production of the Suffolk XK120 C-Type Jaguar. Chassis and bodies will be ready for inspection in April 2008. Our C-Type demonstrator is available for inspection from mid March 2008 and will be shown at many of our promotional events. We look forward to seeing you.
Life is what you make of it...do it while you can .
